FLC Gainesville’s mission is to INVITE, DISCIPLE, and SEND. We take this seriously and endeavor to live it out both locally in Gainesville and North Central Florida and around the globe.
Below are our global ministries, all done in partnership with our friends around the world:
BASIC Nicaragua: The concept of BASIC was conceived when in 2005 a small group of members of First Lutheran Church went to Chinandega, Nicaragua. While there they visited Santa Patricia, a refugee camp made up of people displaced by the devastating Hurricane Mitch. The following year a vision clinic was held there but still the need was so great, much more remained to be accomplished. In 2007, a small delegation returned to Santa Patricia and interviewed all of the families to determine the family structure and their immediate housing, educational and medical needs. A booklet was developed outlining the families and their needs. Since that first vision clinic and the first two houses built in 2006, we have seen over 16,000 patients in vision clinics in and around Santa Patricia and built over 79 houses using local and volunteer workers. We have also created a vision lab in Santa Patricia and employ locals to make glasses for the clinics.
In addition, each year about 100 students, from elementary to medical school are sponsored through the generosity of our donors. Elementary school sponsorship is just $120.00 a year with high school being $150.00. These funds provide for all expenses including school clothes and all needed supplies. Without these sponsorships most of these children could not afford to go to school and would be illiterate.
BASIC Nicaragua was granted official non-profit 501c3 status on May 17, 2012. Thus all donations to the effort become tax free. Visit their site HERE.
Lutheran Bible Translators (LBT): Lutheran Bible Translators makes God’s Word accessible to those who do not yet have it in the language of their hearts.
LCMS Missions: We support missionaries through the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod.
